There is a nice line between a brand with a strong legacy and a little bit of it being filled. Lately, the Maserati was dangerously moving closer to the latter category, but today, with this car, it could all change. Launched on Wednesday, the 2021 Maserati MC20 is the Italian auto toy maker’s first new supercar in 16 years, an important shot at the company’s need for fresh and new things.
Concept
The MC20 is a completely different thing 2004 Ferrari Enzo-based MC12. Too much destruction, for one. In-house design and engineering is its understated, modern supercar look that we love so much. The MC20 is a bit plain from the argument, especially compared to the MC12, but there’s also something vague about it, the fact that it has a cracked nose linking to other Maseratis on the road – well, that and the Galileo will cut the trident. Rear Declider (which is not our favorite style cue, if we are being honest). The MC20 is also very different from the recently departed Granturismo Coupe, which was a bigger and more grand tour.
The MC20 is a marriage of artistic design and aerodynamic sensations, and Maserati has thoughtfully colored those various elements. White car parts? That’s where the designers made the final call. Darker parts at the bottom? Powered by all functionality and performance. That white, by the way, is called Bianco Aud Dace or “White Courage”, which Maserati says is “designed to raise the glow of Mardhir striking from the light of the Mediterranean sunset.”
The body of the car is smooth and clean, with no wide wing hanging at the rear or a splitter spread out at the front. The most aggressive visual component, rear diffuser, packed in raw carbon fiber, vents and intakes are kept to a minimum.
All that wrapped custom carbon monocoque tub developed with race-car chassis expert Dallara. Interestingly, the chassis was built to support three versions. The first you see here is the coupe, while the retractable hardtop spider flavor is coming next. The third version will be electric, creating space for batteries in the same basic layout, with only the layout of carbon filaments changing. There is no ETA though.
Power
The initial coupe will get a 90-degree, twin-turbo, 3.0-liter V6 that will produce 621 horsepower. Maserati says the engine, called the Nettuno, is completely new, and we can’t help but think the engineers were aiming for that power figure. It has exactly the same power output as MC12, although it required twice the cylinders and displacement to achieve it. While mandatory induction is the main driver of that increase in relative output, the company also credits Maserati twin combustion. It is a kind of projection chamber that helps for more efficient combustion inside the engine.
Power reaches the rear wheels via eight-speed, dual-clutch transmission and mechanical linear King rear differential. The entire package weighs 30,30,06 pounds, which Maserati says gives the best-in-class power-to-weight ratio. What class is it? Well, with a starting price of 0 210,000, we’re talking epic McLaren 570 GT. Tough competition, to say the least.
The suspension is a dual-world setup front and rear, a semivirtual steering layout designed to reduce scrub angle and increase steering feel and response. The brakes are brambo carbon ceramic units with six pistons at the front and four at the rear.
Internal
The interior of the MC20, accessible via a door that opens the right path, is a combination of race-focused minimalism and everyday motoring needs. This is most often found on the steering wheel, which the marketing publication says is the “only” essential buttons and controls. Somehow, the launch control and cruise control make the cut. Mode dial, however, is applied to the center console.
Dual, 10-inch display-powered, gauge cluster and serves as infotainment system Android omot tomative, Like on the new Polyester 2. This software will provide easy give access to all your smart home needs while also providing a clean, simple user interface, here referred to as Maserati Touch Control Plus MIA. The MIA, by the way, is Maserati’s intelligent assistant. Yes, another smart accessory for your modern world.
Maserati promises about 5.3 cubic feet of storage in both the trunk and the frank. It’s small, still a big step up from the MC12, which doesn’t even have a trunk. It’s yet another sign that the MC20 is a very different car, intended for daily use, something that would be nice to drive on the road since it’s on track.
And the track is a very important component here, with the MC20 release the car “will take Maserati back into the world of racing.” That’s great news for sure, but it looks like we’ll have to wait a little longer for details of where and when it will be. We are also in the dark about how much this beauty will cost or when lucky fans of the trident will be able to bring one home. We definitely hope we see a few more of these than the MC12. Maserati has scored just 50 along the way.
