The creators of Suikoden announce a spiritual successor that looks like Octopath Traveler

Suikoden is one of the best RPGs from the original PlayStation era, and that says something. The series has been dormant for over a decade, and while Konami has no apparent plans to bring it back, the original developers do: A spiritual successor named Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is on the way, and the first images from the game are they look absolutely gorgeous.

Directed by Suikoden creator Yoshitaka Murayama and other veterans of the series, Eiyuden Chronicle will present a six-character party made up of 100 recruitable heroes from across the game’s fantasy world. In other words: yes, this is a brand new Suikoden game. Boss battles will even take place with a dynamic camera that takes new angles to follow the action, although that will probably look much more impressive with modern technology.

The game will hit Kickstarter on July 27, with a seed funding target of $ 500,000. That will cover a PC version, while more extensive targets will open development on additional console platforms. The Rabbit & Bear development studio was founded earlier this year, so the Eiyuden Chronicle is probably only in the early stages of production now.

However, the visual objective of the game already looks extremely attractive, with a combination of 3D backgrounds, 2D pixel art and fabulous lighting that closely resembles Octopath Traveler.

The developers have provided Gematsu with a host of additional details. I’d expect a long, long wait for the Eiyuden Chronicle, but the pedigree and first looks seem extremely promising.
