ATHENS, Greece (AP) – A bust of the ancient god Hermes, in good condition, was found in central Athens during sewer work, officials said Sunday.
The Greek Ministry of Culture said one of the heads of many who worked as street markers in ancient Athens was found on Friday and that it dates back to about BC00 Seems to be BC – that is, in the late fourth century BC or early third century BC. He portrays the ministry as “mature,” the ministry said, in contrast to the usual portrayal of him as a young man.
The head is in the style of the famous Greek sculptor Alcamenes, which developed in the second half of the fifth century BC, the ministry said.
After serving as a street marker, the head, at some point, was built into the wall of the drainage duct, the ministry said.
