Reckless

Despite the fact that overall interest had waned when Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist teamed up for The Defenders (largely due to the lackluster first season of Iron Fist), the three seasons of Marvel’s Daredevil are as solid and satisfying as you could hope for, with the third and final season being one of the best superhero seasons. The other shows, which also include two seasons of The Punisher, are also worth a visit, though they have more ups and downs in terms of quality.

Gotham

When Gotham started, fans and critics clung to the hook that it was a Batman show without Batman. How could this be? This will never work! But after a few seasons, and some truly insane stories (including a massive twist for Barbara Kean), Gotham embraced her madness and gave us a world where, unlike in the Batman tradition, all Batman villains existed before her. Protection agents

Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, with Phil Coulson by Clark Gregg, started as a direct link to the MCU movies, especially considering the Hydra reveal in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. But as the series continued, and the gap between Marvel TV and Marvel Studios grew, SHIELD stopped worrying entirely about the movies and focused more on their own built-in dramas and sagas. After teaming up with Ghost Rider, battling Hydra in a virtual world, and taking on Kree in a dystopian timeline where Graviton destroyed Earth, SHIELD’s heroes were able to create a legion of rabid fans without depending on the remains of the Avengers.

While all Arrowverse is worth a look, if not just to admire the ambition and scope of the shared universe, the most unexpectedly lighthearted series on the giant machine is DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, which features the castaways Arrow and Flash, like Atom, White Canary, Heat Wave, Constantine and more, on a humorous and unruly stroll through time and space.

As a smaller, but notable, Netflix original, I Am Not Okay With This takes us to a dingy, dilapidated city to see a high school girl who accepts her sexuality and dangerously new telekinetic powers. How we choose the best superhero movies and TV shows on Netflix

The superhero genre is very broad and can sometimes be difficult to pin down. We tried to focus on superhero movies and shows that have a time-tested reputation like The Incredibles, as well as those movies that performed well on aggregate sites like Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic. In some cases, we may choose more divisive movies or shows like I Am Not Okay With This that we still feel are worth watching. The only common thread is that all of these movies and shows are true superhero stories, whether based on comics or original creations.
