Images that look like the wreckage of an airplane have appeared on television and social media. And residents of an island near the location of the missing plane told the BBC, the Indonesian language department, that they had found debris believed to be from the plane.
The Indonesian Ministry of Transport said it was conducting a search and rescue operation.
