A major concern for American motorists when considering an electric car is where it will be charged, and exactly how long that charge will take.
While charging infrastructure in the US is increasing, the time it takes to charge a car can be problematic. While most owners can get a full charge overnight while sleeping, multiple stops of 20 minutes or longer can be charged on a long road trip can be uncomfortable.
Game-changing specifications of Lucid: Lucid Motors said Wednesday that the 900 electric company’s efficient electric vehicle has a charging time of up to 20 miles per minute, as 300 miles in just 20 minutes.
Part of what makes this possible is the charging speed of 350kW on compatible charging infrastructure. This is 100kW faster then Tesla Inc’s (NASDAQ: TSLA) 250kW Supercharger Network.
Lucid also mentioned car-to-roaster and charging hardware for cars to cars, ready for future use.
The production version of Lucid Air is scheduled to debut in an online reveal on Sept. 9.
Benzinga’s Take: A faster charging speed for electric cars is positive. Although most owners leave the house with a full battery of night charge, the spec is important for holidays or long days of driving without much time to recharge.
The Lucid Air must have a large battery, due to the fact that when a user approaches a high charge status, the car must slow down its charge speed to protect the battery.
With a theoretical range of more than 500 miles, this would put 300 miles at 60% battery capacity. Going from zero to 60% seems perfectly possible, as Tesla claims similar charging speeds.
