Tesla Elon Musk updates on autopilot rewrite functionality, timelines

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has returned to his highest level of activity on Twitter lately. It appears to be in a positive frame of mind, likely due to the successful Tesla quarter, despite the factory shutdown related to the coronavirus pandemic.

Last night, he spoke about the upcoming Tesla autopilot rewrite that will increase functionality. However, he said it may be months before it can be released to the public.

Musk turned to Twitter to answer a question from Whole mars about how the autopilot rewriting is going. The Twitter user joked and asked if Tesla plans to call it ‘PlaidNet’. Musk replied that it is going well. He admits that basically everything had to be rewritten.

Musk answered another question from Tesla East Bay Owners asking how the reverse invocation is going. He said a lot of functionality comes with the new software stack, probably referring to the same “rewrite”.

Musk clarified that while it may be ready for launch in 2 to 4 months, that doesn’t mean the functionality will be proven to be safe for customers’ cars. You may be completely done at that point, but there is also a chance that owners may have to wait longer for the update.

For those who understand how this type of technology works, Musk said it is “fundamentally ‘3D’ at every step from training to inference.” He also said it will include a more advanced “labeling system”.

In any case, this is just a suggestion of further progress towards Tesla’s total self-driving ability, which was supposed to be ready a long time ago. Clearly, it is not something that can be rushed.
