Analysis:

The 59 new cases reported in Northeast Tennessee are not a record, but they represent a significant jump from Sunday, when only 19 new cases were reported.

Last week, the region averaged 48.6 new infections per day, more than double the previous week’s 20.6 average. So far in July, 502 cases of COVID-19 have been reported, with an average of 38.6 new cases per day in the region. If that rate continues, Northeast Tennessee could record more than 1,100 new COVID-19 infections in the month.

Only Sullivan (27) and Washington (14) counties reported double-digit infections. Sullivan, who has seen her number of cases rise extremely fast this month and has 24.7% of cases in the region, issued a mask mandate over the weekend. Washington County, which represents 27.5% of the region, issued a similar order on Monday.

A new death was reported in Sullivan County, bringing the region’s total to 11.

The positive test rate for the region was 5.7%.

Northeast Tennessee hospitalizations have continued their worrying increase, to 45 patients on Monday, compared to just 29 on Friday. Of them, about a dozen are in intensive care, and five are on ventilators. During a press conference last week, Ballad said they had a system-wide capacity to serve about 100-125 COVID-19 patients as of Friday, with capacity for up to 250 if needed.

Ballad officials projected they could see more than 100 patients if the disease continues to spread at this rate.

Another local nursing home is reporting at least one case of COVID-19, although a release from the center did not specify whether it was a resident or staff member.

“We have informed the residents, their families and associates of Brookdale Johnson City about this matter,” read a statement from Brookedale Senior Living in Johnson City. “We continue to diligently monitor our residents and associates for signs and symptoms, and continue to work directly with local health officials to help ensure that our residents and associates have appropriate and necessary medical support. We have followed and will follow the guide. of the Washington County Health Department throughout this situation. ”

No new cases were reported at the Agape Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, which reported that an employee had tested positive last week.

A statement from the Bristol Christian Care Center said the facility has had 23 residents with positive results. Seventeen residents are isolated and two remain hospitalized. Four have recovered and two have died.

Thirteen staff members tested positive and five recovered. The rest remain in quarantine. Testing is ongoing at the facility, which now has at least 36 cases since a staff member tested positive on June 25.

This story was updated to include the numbers for the Christian Care Center in Bristol.
