Today Un-Carrier announced a set of comprehensive protections to combat unwanted scammers against mobile phones. Scam Shield is a free service for T-Mobile, Metro by T-Mobile, and Sprint customers that offers enhanced caller ID features and more, including technology integrated into T-Mobile’s network.
Scammer calls have been on the rise lately, especially during the coronavirus pandemic, with scams increasing by 70% from May to June. Americans have already lost $ 80 million from COVID-related scams this year.
“Now that Sprint is part of T-Mobile, we can face even bigger problems, which is why today we take on one of the biggest weaknesses in wireless technology: scams and spam calls,” said Mike Sievert, CEO of T-Mobile. . “Scam Shield has never been more necessary than it is now. Scammers see COVID-19 as an opportunity to take advantage of Americans at their most vulnerable point. When we saw that happen, we knew we had to take bold and swift action. With Scam Shield, T-Mobile customers receive fewer scam calls, period … and it’s all because of our advanced network. “
This is what is inside the T-Mobile Scam Shield:
- Identifying and blocking free scams. Suspicious calls are dialed and customers can turn on scam blocking to never see those calls again.
- Free and improved caller ID. If we know who is calling, you will know who is calling. And with new enhancements, you’ll know when the number is verified to come from a real person or company.
- Second free number. Introducing T-Mobile PROXY, a second number to keep your personal number personal.
- Free number change. If your personal number becomes a spam magnet, get a clean list with a new number.
- Free Scam Shield app. The central point to activate these new protections and, for an additional charge, unlock more advanced call controls. Sprint customers now get free protections, previously an additional charge, in the enhanced Call Screener app.
- Free service Be ID Aware. Get 12-month ID monitoring and alerts from McAfee experts, available for a limited time.
Sprint will be renamed T-Mobile on August 2, and legacy Sprint stores will be renewed and offer T-Mobile deals. With these official rebranding operations underway, we can expect to see some aggressive deals put forward starting next week to celebrate the merger and gain an edge over the competition.
Speaking of which, T-Mobile has called its competitors, including Verizon and AT&T, to charge for scam protection services.
“As an industry, we have to be better. Today, Verizon and AT&T are taking advantage of consumer fears. They are charging to protect you from the scams and automatic calls that their network brings you. It’s wrong and it has to stop, ”added Sievert. “We can be better, and at T-Mobile, we will continue to correct the mistakes of this industry. Today, I am challenging Operators to abandon their assets, stop benefiting from fear and do the right thing, because everyone needs and deserves protection now, more than ever. ”
