- Zurich beat Lugano 1-0 at Cornaredo and beat Ticino in the table.
- For Lugano it is the first defeat this season, at home the first in more than a year.
- In the other games on Sunday, Servette YB surprisingly wins 2-1, St. Gallen wins 1-0 in Lausanne.
Lugano’s minimalism had been successful so far this season. With just 11 hits, Ticino had scored 16 points in 8 games. But against the FCZ, the tried and tested recipe was no longer enough. Without the best artists like Alexander Gerndt, Jonathan Sabbatini or Fabio Daprela, the people of Ticino had to leave the scepter to the guest.
The Zurich team’s effort was finally rewarded in the 58th minute. Blaz Kramer, who had already replaced the injured Benjamin Kololli in the 35th minute, failed miserably at first, but then used a pass from Toni Domgjoni and caught the brilliant goalkeeper of the Lugano Noam Baumann between the legs.
Ardaiz failed the tie
Substitute Joaquín Ardaiz gave Lugano the best chance to equalize in the 74th minute. However, the Uruguayan could not change anything about his team’s first loss this season. Even more bitter: Lugano hadn’t lost at home since November 10, 2019, and this series ended too.
Thanks to the victory, Zurich moved up the table and overtook Lugano. However, Massimo Rizzo’s team has played two more games.
So it goes
Zurich travels to Lucerne on Wednesday and receives Servette the following Sunday. Lugano will take care of St. Gallen on Wednesday, before going to YB in Bern on Saturday next week.
