Starting in spring 2021, only two instead of four lanes will be temporarily available for motorized traffic on Bellerivestrasse in the city of Zurich. This creates space for a double-sided bike infrastructure.
The city of Zurich’s civil engineering supervisor Richard Wolff surprised the mayor Wednesday night with the idea. At the end of the current year, a detailed traffic concept will be developed for the test, as announced by the city of Zurich on Thursday.
Bellevue bottleneck
The experiment should contribute to the development of a street renovation project. Traffic studies have shown that a reduction from four to two lanes is possible on the section from Tiefenbrunnen station to Kreuzstrasse. The remaining capacity is sufficient, as the maximum volume of traffic is determined by the bottleneck at Bellevue.
Findings from the experiment should flow into further planning. Construction of the renovation project is expected to begin in 2025. (SDA / bö)
