New models and better infrastructure: in 2020, electromobility should continue to accelerate. Interested parties should pay attention to some details when buying an electric car.
No more odor of gasoline or diesel, without annoying vibrations. Electric cars have more advantages than just the environmental impact of zero local emissions. This year, new models hit the market in various price ranges and vehicle categories. But before someone starts looking for an electric car, there are a few things to consider.
If you are considering buying an electric car, you should first consider how and where the electric car should be charged. “The usage behavior is different from that of combustion engines,” says Stefan Heimlich, President of the German Auto Club Europe (ACE). Electric vehicles are mainly charged at home. In Switzerland, only about 20 percent of electronic car charges take place in public spaces, writes the Touring Club Switzerland (TCS) on its website.
According to TCS, there are currently more than 3 in Switzerland’600 charging stations in public spaces with outputs between 3.7 kW (slow charge) and 150 kW (fast charge). “Basically, the faster you have to go, the higher the costs,” writes the TCS. The Federal Office of Energy website “ichtankestrom.ch” provides an overview of public charging stations (connection type, maximum output) and shows if they are currently available.
Electric cars for city dwellers: does it make sense and is it possible?
In the fourth episode of our video series on the future of electromobility, we look at what needs to happen in cities to make them more attractive to electric cars.

How fast can you get a full charge?
Experts advise you to examine and question the technical data of electric vehicles. In addition to the power and size of the battery, the electric car also has to do with charging speed. This includes charging with alternating or direct current, and especially if it is single-phase or three-phase.
Depending on the make and model, the so-called on-board charger in the electric vehicle cannot transport electricity from the wall box to the car fast enough, so the charging speed is reduced. In the vehicle, the alternating current from the network is converted to direct current for storage in the battery. If the on-board charger is weak, the charging capacity cannot be fully utilized.
Therefore, electric cars must have at least a three-phase charger, even if some cars have an additional cost. Direct current flows directly to high-speed charging stations on main roads, here the on-board charger does not play a restrictive role.
Electric cars are coming! – Faster than expected?
Less than 3 percent of newly registered cars in Switzerland currently run on an electric motor. But by 2022 it should be 15 percent. With the Tesla 3, an electric car topped the list of newly registered vehicles for the first time in March 2019. Is the boom starting now?

How much rank do i really need?
The question of the desired range is still associated with certain reserves in electric cars. If you consider exactly how many kilometers the vehicle actually covers per day, you will discover that it is the way to work or go shopping, and of course back. The “fear of scope” is often unfounded, experts say. What is done during the day can be easily recharged at night.
Although the smallest vehicles for the city usually have a smaller battery and therefore a shorter range, cars in this category make sense. Solid and good electric cars are available from around CHF 22,000 (Citroen C-Zero, Mitsubishi I-MIEV). The electric Seat Mii, the Skoda Citigo E IV or the VW E-Up also offer a realistic range of almost 200 kilometers. A large battery provides more range, but it also needs to be charged longer.
Electric cars as electricity storage: how the car becomes part of the energy system
Until now, automobiles were a means of transportation, fun machines, and symbols of status. The electric car has a whole new role: the electric vehicle will play an essential role in our energy system in the future.

Of course, those interested should also ask how often they drive long distances or if they want to go on vacation with the vehicle. In this case, you should inquire about the charging options on the route before starting your journey.
Operating costs are lower for the electric car
With an electric car, operating costs are reduced by up to 60 percent because maintenance is significantly less and electricity costs are less than the costs of gasoline or diesel. In addition, there are some funding opportunities in Switzerland that vary in size by canton or municipality. The “Swiss eMobility” interest group provides an overview on its website.
“Bluewin” explains: Is biofuel an alternative to electric mobility?
The internal combustion engine will soon have its day. Seriously? In addition to battery-powered vehicles and those with fuel cells, there are other climate-friendly alternatives.

Important: affordable technology and a large dealer network
Jens Dralle, head of testing and technology for the German magazine “Auto, Motor und Sport”, suspects that the new VW ID3 and Opel Corsa-E models, which are also available in Switzerland, will change the market. “There are two popular models of manufacturers with a large network of distributors. In addition, there is a wide range of variants and an acceptable price. »
That will bring movement to the electronic market. Because in addition to the technical details and the right car for the respective usage behavior, affordable technology and the right close dealer are important purchasing criteria.
Parallel to the new models, other manufacturers are increasing their production of vehicles that have already been introduced, so there will be a wider range for the first time this year. Dralle finds small electric cars particularly interesting. “They take e-mobility where it makes the most sense: in urban regions,” says Dralle.
