Yellow smoke rose from the chimney of the Basel garbage incineration plant on Tuesday. Authorities rule out an environmental hazard.

The cause of the unusual smoke leak at 10:55 a.m. it was a batch of waste whose nitrogen content had been excessive for a short time. This was announced by the Basel Department of Economic, Social and Environmental Affairs (WSU) after clarification with the administration of the Basel Regional Waste Incineration Plant (RSMVA).

As a result, the RSMVA’s efficient exhaust air purification system was able to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions from the combustion process insufficiently. However, according to the WSU, only small amounts of nitrogen oxides were released into the air, so an environmental hazard can be excluded.

The RSMVA at the Klybeck plant is operated by Veolia Industry Building – Switzerland. Authorities agreed with the company that precautions must be taken to avoid such events in the future.

Critical substances can also be treated in the RSMVA. In order not to overwhelm the exhaust air system, the waste is dosed into the incinerator according to the message.
