YB shoots classics thanks to Nsame and Elia, and thus keeps the FCB at a distance

YB – Basel 2: 1

Raiffeisen Super League, 8th round, season 20/21

21.11.2020

The Young Boys win their permanent rivals’ first season duel 2-1 against FC Basel in Bern. Forward Meschack Elia scored the winning goal in the 61st minute.

The goal sequence (0: 1, 1: 1, 2: 1) was the same as in the cup final on August 30. Following Elia’s goal, who wandered away on a short pass from Jean-Pierre Nsame, overpowered a defender and found himself unsustainable in the far corner, the Young Boys dominated the action until the end. The basler, for whom Pajtim Kasami played defensive midfield, failed to dominate in the finals and did not have high-profile chances. YB was, for example, with the possibility of substitute Nicolas Moumi Ngamaleu, 3: 1 closer than Basel to equalize.

Yet for the Young Boys, the same thing happened in the big game as in most of their championship games this season: They create a lot of real scoring opportunities without capitalizing on them in a normal ratio. This was the case in the 0-0 victory against Servette in Geneva, the 1-0 victories against Vaduz and Lucerne and, more clearly, in the most recent 0-0 victory in Wankdorf against St. Gallen. In the first seven rounds of the Super League, the Bernese scored exactly one goal per game. One remembers the 2018/19 season when YB set the Super League record average of 2.75 with 99 goals.

Klose: “I’m angry to leave the field as a loser”

Nsame marks the beginning of the turning point

The Bernese’s first goal shortly before the break was even a curiosity. Goalkeeper David von Ballmoos tried to stimulate the game from far from the penalty area. With the ball high down, he controlled Basel’s defense. Jean-Pierre Nsame ran a few steps with the ball on target and defeated goalkeeper Heinz Lindner, who was replacing Djordje Nikolic in quarantine, with an unsustainable low shot.

At the time it was 0: 1. The Young Boys missed their chances at regular intervals, while Basler used an Arthur Cabral foul, which Silvan Hefti owed to Afimico Pululu after 22 minutes.
