Xiaomi shows its new flagship Mi 11 and celebrates a world premiere

Xiaomi unveiled its new flagship Xiaomi Mi 11 in China on Monday night. The Chinese smartphone is the world’s first mobile phone to feature Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 888 processor. This only came out in early December.

Xiaomi is ahead of Samsung, which will also install the new chip in its upcoming Galaxy 21. Like Apple’s A14 or Huawei’s Kirin 9000, the Snapdragon 888 is said to be much more powerful thanks to the 5-nanometer process. Among other things, graphics should render 30 percent faster, which is particularly advantageous for games. Qualcomm has also integrated the 5G modem into the processor. This means that manufacturers no longer have to install an external modem and can use the space for other things.

Xiaomi relies on many megapixels

With the Mi 11, Xiaomi has introduced a mobile phone that comes with more or less typical high-end specs. The AMOLED screen not only offers a high resolution (3120 x 1440 pixels), but also a refresh rate of 120 Hertz. With a screen diagonal of 6.81 inches, the mobile phone is definitely not for fans of small devices.

Depending on the version, you can choose between 128GB and 256GB of memory. You can also choose between 8 and 12 GB of RAM for main memory, although the latter is only possible with a 256 GB memory version.

When it comes to the camera, Xiaomi stays true to the pixel madness and has given the Mi 11 a main camera with 108 megapixels. The sensor comes from Samsung and should even enable 8k video with 30fps. The main lens is flanked by an ultra wide angle lens and a macro lens. Those who value a telephoto zoom look inside the tube of the Mi 11. You take selfies with a single camera that offers 20 megapixels.

Wireless charging turbo, but does not include charger

The battery is a decent 4600 mAh. With the included charger (55 watts), the cell phone should go from 0 to 100 percent in 45 minutes. It’s fast, if not as fast as Oppo. Xiaomi makes up for the somewhat slower charging with an even faster Qi standard. If you charge the Mi 11 wirelessly, you can do it with up to 50 watts. This means that the Mi 11 should charge wirelessly in just under an hour. For comparison: iPhone 12 and Galaxy S20 wirelessly support a maximum of 15 watts.

Xiaomi’s announcement that the power supply will not be included in the scope of delivery was somewhat surprising. At least not in the standard version. The reason given was the environment. After all, the Mi 11 should also be optionally available in a bundle with a charging adapter that shouldn’t cost more.

Price on par with the predecessor

On the software side, the Mi 11 comes with Android 10. Xiaomi has packed its latest MIUI 12.5 UI on top. This should score with various optimizations. Most notably, the operating system should now use about 20 percent less system memory.

As for color, there are Midnight Gray, Horizon Blue and Frost White with glass backs and Lilac Purple and Honey Beige as faux fur.

The Mi 11 is currently only available for the Chinese market. The cheapest model costs the equivalent of around 540 Fraken, while the high-end version costs around 100 francs more. Therefore, the devices are roughly in the price range of the predecessor Mi 10.

But these are only the prices for China. In Switzerland, the devices are likely to cost a lot more. If you use the Mi 10 as a comparison, the Swiss price of the cheapest model will probably be around 660 francs again. If you want the best equipment, you should expect almost CHF 1,000.

The question remains when the Mi 11 will be available in Switzerland. Xiaomi has not yet said a word about it. It can be assumed that the group will present the Mi 11 for Europe, as well as the Mi 10, in February. The fact that Xiaomi has already presented the device at a first event is probably due to the fact that for public relations reasons they did not want to give Samsung the title of “first smartphone with Snapdragon 888”.

Since Huawei’s sales figures have noticeably declined due to the US ban outside of China, Xiaomi has greatly boosted its expansion. Statistics also show that the group is benefiting from Huawei’s weaknesses: In November, Xiaomi replaced Apple as the third-largest smartphone maker.
