The stranger had previously contacted the 90-year-old man by phone, as the Basel prosecutor announced on Friday. The latter told him that there had been robberies and that, therefore, his money was not kept securely in the bank or at his home.

Then the woman took 10,000 francs from her post office and headed home. On the way a stranger approached him. He said he had previously called the woman on the phone. The pensioner handed over the money. The author moved and, according to the message, promised to return the money later.

Jewels placed in the mailbox

In addition, a 96-year-old woman deposited her jewelry in the mailbox in Basel on Wednesday because a “police officer” had told her by phone that the thieves were on the move.

The Basel public prosecutor’s office explicitly warns against so-called counterfeiting cases. In the past few days, the cantonal police emergency call center has received around three dozen reports that people have been contacted by a “criminal police officer”, a “police officer” or a “commissioner”.

The fake police officers would also “scare people” because allegedly armed robbers were going to steal the money they had at home. They also said a family member had caused a serious traffic accident and would be arrested if buses were not paid, according to the statement.
