From a Swiss point of view, the World Championship could not have started better! First day, first trump card, first medal!
Marlen Reusser (29) achieves a sensational race in the women’s time trial at Imola. At the finish line on the Formula 1 track “Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari”, he is just 15 seconds away from the world championship title after just under 32 kilometers.
After winning the bronze medal at the European Championship, the Bernese woman had hopes of getting on the podium in the World Cup race before the start and was an extended favorite. But alongside her were strong competitors at the beginning.
«I had to fight»
The route was adapted more or less precisely to his “type of scooter”. She only struggled with the small climb six kilometers from the finish. “It was really tough, I lost a gear or two on the climb at the end.”
During the trip, Reusser didn’t even realize that he was doing so well in the race. The team did not give him the good intermediate time by radio. “I still have to complain, that was not good!”
The world champion is Anna van der Breggen (30) from the Netherlands in 40:20 minutes. In third place is Ellen van Dijk (33), a second Dutch woman.
First World Cup medal since 2006
For Reusser, who turned his career around in cycling, this is by far the biggest success of his career. In his words: “Another step forward.” Since the 2006 World Cup and Karin Thürig, no Swiss woman has won a medal.
In Saturday’s street race of more than 144 kilometers, he will also be at the start again.
