Retailer Coop is banning plastic cutlery in stores and take-out products. Starting next Monday, the fork, knife and spoon will be made of wood and cost 10 cents.
The cutlery generated around 196 tons of plastic waste, reports the “NZZ am Sonntag”. With the change, you also perceive a customer need.
In a next step, the retailer also wants to tackle bowl and salad packaging. In the future, the containers will be developed with a higher proportion of recycled plastic and a thinner protective film.
Films of meat, cheese and potato chips account for the largest amount of plastic. Around 50,000 tons of plastic end up in the trash every year. Nearby are bowls, cans and garbage bags (both 45,000 tons). (ohe)
