Wolf kills three sheep near Altstätten: two dead and one seriously injured
A wolf killed three sheep in a fenced meadow in Altstätten. The farmer discovered the three animals that had died on Wednesday morning.

(Pd / tn / but) On Wednesday morning, a farmer discovered two dead sheep and a seriously injured sheep in his pasture in the community of Altstätten. The summoned ranger had to redeem the third sheep and confirmed that the wolf is responsible for the cracks, the canton writes in a press release.
When asked, Arno Puorger from the Nature, Game and Fisheries Bureau confirmed the cracks: “With the help of the crack image, the ranger was able to confirm that it is a wolf and not, for example, a fox that has handled a dead sheep. »
The ranger took DNA samples to identify the wolf. The investigation will take several weeks.
Surprising location of the dead animals
It is not surprising that the wolf ventured into the north of the canton of St. Gallen, says Puorger. “Until now, the animals have been active mainly in the southern part of the canton.” In the meantime, however, one must wait for the wolf to move throughout the canton.
The dead sheep were eventually found in a fenced-in meadow near Kornberg Tobel, a few hundred meters from a farm. This is in the Altstätten community area. “It’s a long way to the royal city,” says Puorger.
Also, because the wolf is more likely to be found in the southern part of the canton, the torn sheep were not adequately protected from the wolf. The pasture was fenced off, but the fence was not “adequate protection for wolves.”
