The Pfizer / Biontech Covid-19 vaccine is supplied in so-called multi-dose vials. “Regardless of the type of syringe used, at least five units of the single prescribed 0.3 ml dose of the vaccine can be reliably withdrawn,” writes the Swiss Medicines Agency Swissmedic on its website.
However, with proper syringes and careful handling, six doses can be taken from the vial, he says. This is already in the Swiss drug information approved by Swissmedic. This makes it possible in Switzerland to vaccinate six people per vial instead of just five as in the EU.
However, according to the Swiss Medicines Agency, it must be ensured that the vaccine recipient always receives 0.3 ml of the Covid-19 vaccine. If, for example, the last or sixth dose has less than 0.3 ml left, it should not be used for vaccination.
With a view to the approval of more coronavirus vaccines, all requests would be “treated with the highest priority,” writes Swissmedic. However, the “data available to date on safety, efficacy and quality” are not yet sufficient for approval.
