The Swiss skier needed time to get started in the ski circus. She is now the most consistent speed athlete and has already celebrated many successes. This is how he founds his stony path.

Corinne Suter already competed in her first World Cup when she was 17 years old, but the period of suffering until advancement at the highest level is long for the Schwyzerin. “They say that in skiing you need time to know the routes. I was really impatient, “he recalls in an interview with NZZ. “When I first heard that it wouldn’t work on the inexperienced descent, I thought: Yeah, just talk. I was probably naive too. “

For a long time, Suter wanted to force his own success. He was pretty crazy. With this attitude you will always get one on the roof, and at some point you start to doubt ”, recalls the 26-year-old about her most difficult stage. “It used to work so well that all of a sudden you can’t go on anymore, you have to fight. Back then I was wondering if I was in the right place to ski. “

It definitely is, but Corinne Suter needs more start-up and adjustment time in her early days than others. “I need a little more time before I feel comfortable in a team and find the right contact with the coaches,” she explains. But that does not mean that their well-being has to be in total harmony at all times: “I am not like that, it is enough if I have one or two trusted people on the mountain.”

Suter: “In my living room there is still room for more crystal balls”

The long fight is paying off

Looking back, he learned a lot from this time and was able to take it with him. “You always hear that you can learn something in any situation. In tough times, you may not believe it, but then you realize – it really is. In hindsight, it’s positive that I also had to fight once, ”says Suter. It was definitely worth it.

At the 2019 World Cup, the Central Swiss woman unexpectedly won silver and bronze – it was the long-awaited release. From that moment on it rises steeply. Last winter, by winning both downhill and super-G crystal balls, she was crowned the undisputed queen of speed, even if she imagined it very differently. “I always had the image in front of my eyes of how I would get the crystal balls, and then all of this faded into the background because of Corona. I think it was horror for everyone. ”

Due to the corona pandemic, the 2019/20 season will be interrupted from one second to the next, and Suter will only get his crystal balls at a later time, during a visit to the “Sports Panorama”. Suter explains: “We were in Sweden, preparing for a race and then, from one minute to the next, it had just finished. At first I didn’t understand what was happening. It was just about getting home as quickly as possible. ”

New challenges in a new role

For Suter, the promotion to top sprinter is particularly notable off-track. “I am still struggling with this role. Recently a girl wanted me to have my autograph on a new jacket. So I said: I won’t do that, I’ll write my name on a nice jacket. ”When he sees the girl’s disappointment, he quickly changes his mind.

Suter is fundamentally pleased by the broad interest in him in Switzerland. “It’s good that so many people are interested in him. But it’s not easy when I go shopping, for example. “Today she makes everything more conscious and only walks into a store when she really needs something.” Because I know that people want something from me when they see me in a store or in the street, ”explains Suter.

On the other hand, little has changed for Suter on the slopes. Even after excellent results, your hunger for success is far from satisfied. “That is a bit strange to me. I’m already satisfied, but I practiced almost more in the summer to improve even more. You don’t have to lean back, I always look ahead. ”

An added boost is also strong competition within the team, Suter says. “You can feel what each driver wants and you can see the progress almost every day. This is exactly what is needed to keep you from standing still. Don’t go any further, that’s the worst thing that can happen to you. “You can ask a speed specialist.

Our ski stars – Corinne Suter in a chat with “blue Sport”

Corinne Suter still doesn’t feel like a star. No other Swiss ski racer has celebrated more success in the last two winter seasons than the 25-year-old from Schwyz. And the speed specialist has also found happiness in her private life. “Blue Sport” host Stefan Eggli caught up with Corinne Suter for a chat.
