After finishing ninth last season, SC Bern has to make peace with a new sports leadership.
Coach Kari Jalonen and Sporting Director Alex Chatelain formed the leading team at SC Bern for 4 seasons. And above all, they were successful: the Bernese won the classification three times and was proclaimed champion of Switzerland twice.
Then last season, the low point: the SCB finished qualifying in ninth place and would not have qualified for the playoffs, without Corona. In the summer, the posts of Jalonen and Chatelains were filled: the new coach is Canadian Don Nachbaur, the new sports director is Florence Schelling.

New coach, new system
“We are playing with a different system than in previous years,” announces coach Nachbaur. “Certainly we will not be a passive team, but an aggressive one.” Under the quiet Finn Jalonen, the SCB were known for their defensive and controlled ice hockey.
“It’s a new wind blowing,” confirms SCB captain Simon Moser. “The new coach speaks louder than Kari (Jalonen) and we are going to play an American game system again.”
The “Mutzen” will have to prove this season that they are adaptable. “I still see a lot of old habits among the players, but that will change,” Nachbaur said.
SCB Sports Director Florence Schelling has so far been pleased with the new member of the gang: “Everything was new to him. She needed her time to find herself and get to know everyone. “
The long break as an opportunity?
It’s been a good 3 months since Nachbaur took office and a full 7 months since Bern’s last competitive match. Schelling can also draw positive things from the long break: “It was new for everyone. We were able to get closer and make decisions together. “
In any case, after the weak last season, the SCB are not one of the main favorites for the championship title. Consequently, Schelling retains expectations: “The goal is to get to the top 6.”
