The Child Jesus arrived on time: on Tuesday the army reported that the first 107,000 cans of Corminaty had arrived. Corminaty? Yes, that is the name of the first Pfizer / Biontech corona vaccine approved in Switzerland. The first Swiss will be vaccinated today, Wednesday, in homes for the elderly and the elderly in Lucerne and Appenzell Innerrhoden.
Even if it’s just individual vaccines, with which the vaccination and logistics plan is put to the test, what a Christmas present! Finally, after ten long months, the first ray of light is visible on the corona-covered horizon.
BAG wants us to inform ourselves
The federal vaccination campaign also begins at the same time. But the appeal is not about “Get vaccinated!” It is about “Get more information!” With good reason. First, there are not enough doses available to vaccinate large numbers of people. The 107,000 doses are enough for 53,500 people, because two vaccines are required per person. And only another 250,000 cans will arrive in Switzerland in mid-January.
In the first weeks, people over 75 years of age and high-risk patients with heart disease, high blood pressure, respiratory problems or immunodeficiencies are vaccinated.
Second, and not least, the federal government knows vaccine skepticism among the people, which is traditionally large and is increasing again with these new vaccines. The Federal Office of Public Health (BAG), therefore, limits itself to providing information on the possibility of vaccination. The website www.bag-coronavirus.ch/impung was launched yesterday, where you can find numerous facts about vaccination and answer questions.
The vaccination (red) carpet
“First of all, it’s about rolling out the carpet for vaccination,” Adrian Kammer, Head of Campaigns for BAG, tells BLICK. “Now the public must be invited to find out about vaccination, even if the general public still has to wait a bit.” In addition to the website, there should be advertisements, online and social media advertising, brochures, and fact sheets.
Starting in January, doctors and nurses will also announce the vaccination. There is a reason to trust true experts and not models, according to Kammer: “Doctors and nurses have a high level of credibility.”
No serious side effects
But vaccination is not simply praised to heaven. Not only do the benefits and benefits need to be addressed, but safety issues and side effects also need to be addressed. And it doesn’t look bad in that regard. “The vaccine is very effective,” Christoph Berger, chairman of the Federal Commission for Immunization Affairs, said yesterday. And: So far, there are no known serious side effects, only mild such as fever, headache or muscle pain.
We are convinced that open and transparent communication promises success, Kammer told BLICK. “The goal is for everyone to find out for themselves and decide for themselves whether to get vaccinated.” Because yesterday the BAG did not leave any doubt about one thing: vaccination will not only be free, but absolutely voluntary.
