The Zurich High Court sentenced Esra L. * from Winterthur, who traveled to the Islamic State (IS) area in 2014 at the age of 15, to prison. Most of this has already been accomplished. You do not have to continue a therapy that you resisted. The Zurich High Court announced on Thursday that it has been proven without a doubt that the accused was in Syria in a location attributable to IS. After a written appeal, the court issued a ruling on October 22.
In 2014, the young woman from Winterthur traveled with her then 16-year-old brother Vedad L. * to the territory of the terrorist militia of the Islamic State (IS) in Syria. The brother is said to have attended a Quran school there and supported the logistics of the IS. According to the indictment, she did the housework herself, looked after young children, and taught some English.
Furthermore, both brothers are said to have been in close contact with IS sympathizers and tried to persuade family and friends in Switzerland to have children.
He was detained for nine months
At the Winterthur juvenile court trial last year, the two refused to give testimony and presented their trip as a harmless relief effort for the population.
The court still convicted the two of them for violating IS’s ban. The young woman received a 10-month suspended sentence, for which she had already been in prison for nine months during the investigation period.
In front of the higher court, he mainly defended himself against psychotherapy ordered by the lower court. The higher court now agreed. The court said the court did not order an outpatient measure under the juvenile law.
Brother accepted the verdict
The accused is no longer a teenager, but an adult. You have successfully completed vocational training and are integrated into working life. A continuation of the measure against his will is not promising. The higher court also overturned the instruction given by the lower court to report to the police regularly.
Unlike his sister, the one-year-old older brother accepted the Winterthur court judgment. He received eleven months in prison. During the investigation period, he had already been in prison for 10 months.
Obviously, he did not renounce his ideology: the Federal Prosecutor’s Office has already opened a new criminal proceeding against him, again for violating the IS ban.
