The Christmas markets in Willisau, Zofingen and Hochdorf are canceled due to the corona pandemic. A “light” version is out of the question for the organizing committees.
The Willisau and Zofingen Christmas markets will not take place this year. The two organizing committees have announced it. Every effort had been made to be able to contain the Christmas markets, but due to the development of the corona virus and the strict protection measures, the two OKs came to the conclusion that the market cannot be operated in the usual way.
“A light version, without food stands and without a support program, is not a satisfactory alternative for us,” says Sandra Affolter, co-director of Christkindli-Märt Willisau, upon request. The unique atmosphere of this event would be lost. The Christkindli market would degenerate into a market for pure goods, which would not correspond to our expectations.
The introduction of a mask requirement in Christkindli-Märt was also discussed. Linked to this would have been a requirement that visitors not be allowed to consume anything in the entire area. This idea was out of the question for the OC, because the food stands are mostly run by Willisau associations on a voluntary basis. Also, according to Affolter, the extra effort for the three market days would have been enormous.
Affolter doesn’t think the situation will change for October. “That is why this decision should already help avoid unnecessary costs.”
It is very important for the organizing committees of Willisau and Zofingen that next year the Christmas markets can take place again in the popular and traditional way. The Willisau Christmas Market attracts about 25,000 visitors a year, the Zofingen one 40,000.

The Hochdorf Wiehnachtsmärt is also a victim of the crown situation. According to the organizers, the uncertainty about how the situation will develop and the current regulations led to this decision. The protection of visitors, exhibitors and assistants has the highest priority. Furthermore, the requirements are not feasible and economically unsustainable.
