In May Christian Gross announced his resignation as a manager. Now it seems he is about to take over the crisis-ridden FC Schalke 04.

On Tuesday there is finally another success for Schalke 04. The 29-match Bundesliga horror series without a win is not yet broken, but at least Royal Blue can motivate themselves in the second round of the cup with a 3-3 win. 1 in the Ulm regional division.

But now it is clear that interim coach and club legend Huub Stevens will no longer coach Schalke in the new year. “As of tonight, I am no longer a Schalke manager,” Stevens said after the victory in Ulm. The bottom of the Bundesliga table is now looking for a successor to Manuel Baum’s shot. And according to constant media reports, a Swiss is the top favorite. “Signs are growing that he is (the new coach) Christian Gross,” writes the “Bild”. The “WAZ” headlines: “Christian Gross’s track is getting hotter.”

The 66-year-old coach, considered the most successful Swiss coach (15 titles), ended his coaching career in May this year. But he did not rule out a comeback. “Never say never. I definitely do not want to rule it out. But if so, then abroad,” Gross said in the spring in the “Sports Panorama”. He is a “footballer from head to toe” and “I miss football a lot.”

Gross is familiar with relegation battles

Why should the title hamster save Schalke from relegation? Because you have already proven twice that you can do it. In November 1997, Gross joined Tottenham. The Spurs lost only one of the last nine league games and were finally able to save themselves. In 2009 he took over VfB Stuttgart, which was in 16th place after 15 days of play. At the end of the season, VfB reached sixth place and moved on to the Europa League. The sporting director in Stuttgart at the time was Jochen Schneider, today Schalke’s sporting director.

Most recently, Christian Gross worked successfully for years in Saudi Arabia and Egypt, after causing a sensation in Switzerland, especially with FC Basel. Gross led Bebbi to four championship titles and four cups in ten years and in 2002 for the first time in the Champions League.
