The name of the replacement candidate for Elisabeth Ackermann must be submitted to the State Chancellery before noon on Wednesday. Members of the Greens will meet behind closed doors on Tuesday night.

On Monday, the president of the Greens, Harald Friedl, assured that the district president, Elisabeth Ackermann, will appear again. She herself seems to have this opinion; In the evening he talks to the members of Basta, explaining his reasons why he does not want to miss the second vote despite the miserable result. You can feel the fighting spirit. At least a little. And then after sleeping another night, or not, the decision must have been made: you don’t want to.

Ackermann surprised many with this. Even Jürg Stöcklin, Grand Councilor, member of the Basel Greens leadership and party strategist. He says: “Until last night it sounded different.” It was his personal decision. “I and the whole party would have supported Elisabeth Ackermann and we would have continued to support her.”

Stöcklin can understand Ackermann’s resignation up to a point. “There was strong public pressure and strong criticism from the media. It wasn’t easy for her, ”she says. You have to accept and respect this step.

Candidacy SP excluded

But now what’s next? As of Wednesday noon, the State Chancellery must receive the name of the candidate who will replace Ackermann. There is not much time left. On Tuesday night, members of the Greens meet to discuss how to proceed. The event takes place behind closed doors. If all goes well, the new name will be announced that night.

Basta co-chair Heidi Mück said in an interview with BaZ on Monday: “If Elisabeth chooses not to go through the second ballot, then I have to seriously consider a candidacy. Otherwise, there is no reason for me. “After Ackermann’s resignation, Mück did not comment. Apparently, he has to digest the decision of the incumbent district president first. Basta’s national councilor, Sibel Arslan, was also appointed as a possible candidate. But Jürg Stöcklin does not want to comment on names. He simply says: “I hope we find a good candidate.” He would prefer a woman. But if this is not feasible, a man would also go. So, Thomas Grossenbacher, after all ? Or maybe Michael Wüthrich?

The PS, which Ackermann strongly supported in the election campaign, should also be included in the decision-making process. Stöcklin believes that it is highly unlikely that the replacement candidate will come from the ranks of the Social Democrats. As the loser in the Grand Council elections, the party would not have standing to do so either.

The president of the SP, Pascal Pfister, says: “We are preparing the electoral campaign together for the second ballot, but the choice of candidates remains the Green Alliance.” Sending a fourth candidate to the race is not an option for the SP, as it has very little voter turnout. On Tuesday night, the assembly of delegates will decide which candidate to support. Gender is an argument, says Pfister. But not the only one.
