Wartau, the community of seven villages at the foot of the Gonzens in Werdenberg, has the highest tax rate in the canton of St. Gallen at 160 percent. The Rheintaler Rebgemeinde Balgach has the lowest after a reduction in the tax rate of five percent; with 72 percentage points, Mörschwil (tax rate of 75 percent) ranks second. In the most fiscally efficient municipality of the canton, municipal taxes are less than half that of the municipality with the highest tax, as the current assessment of the cantonal tax office shows. If the total tax burden is compared with federal, cantonal and municipal taxes, the relative differences between municipalities are smaller.
