This weekend was extremely mild for mid-November. In Basel the thermometer read 19.3 degrees on Sunday afternoon, and in the mountains it was hot with more than 2 degrees at 3000 meters. The only killer of the party was the mist, which remained mainly on Lake Neuchâtel.
The warm phases around Martin’s Day, that is, around November 11, are often referred to as Martini summer. The southwestern and foehn locations in the Alps are responsible for an extremely mild climate and, at least in the mountains, sunny. Exactly this constellation happened this weekend.
In Basel 10 degrees too hot
Strong southwesterly winds brought very warm air from Spain, especially towards the Jura, on Sunday. In Basel, the thermometer read 19.3 degrees early Sunday. So it was over 10 degrees too hot. On an average November day, you can expect a maximum of 8.7 degrees in Basel. In Delémont a maximum value of 18.2 degrees was measured on Sunday and in Fahy, in Pruntruterzipfel, it was 17.9 degrees. Also in these places it was 10 degrees too hot for a November afternoon. It was completely different in Neuchâtel. There the fog did not dissipate on Saturday, and on Sunday it was also early afternoon when the first rays of sun appeared. Consequently, there were highs of 8 degrees in the afternoon, which was exactly the long-term average. In between, around 13 degrees were measured in afternoon sunlight. In foehn areas it was almost 18 degrees in some places on Sunday, for example in Chur.
Whoever gave that is given: Fog!
The fog was mainly found in the known fog holes. The southern foot of the Jura was particularly affected, especially the section from the Orbe plain to Solothurn, the mouth of the Aare, the urban area of Zurich and the cantons of Schaffhausen and Thurgau. There the fog did not clear until midafternoon; on Saturday there was no clearing at all at Lake Neuchâtel, Lake Murten and Lake Biel. But there was also fog in southern Ticino. In the Mendrisiotto on Saturday there were still 3.5 hours of sunshine, on Sunday only 14 minutes.
Mountain weather again
Outside of the fog, however, it was mostly sunny, Saturday even often cloudless. At the 3000-meter-high Titlis a maximum temperature of 2.3 degrees was recorded on Sunday, at the Pilatus at 2100 meters the maximum temperature was 10.3 degrees on Sunday. On Sunday afternoon, the foehn rose in the Alpine valleys, and in the heights of the Jura the southwest wind reached peaks of almost 100 kilometers per hour.
Ephemeral
A cold front crosses us Monday night. With it, the line of snow falls from 2,400 meters to 1,200 to 1,600 meters on Monday at noon. The weather calmed down again on Monday afternoon. Tuesday through Thursday, the high pressure weather continues before the next cold front catches up with us Thursday night. On Friday even little snow is possible below 1000 meters.
