Brrrr, it’s cold (and the snow fell below 1000 meters too)
Pancratius is the first ice saint. And it lived up to its reputation: on Tuesday night, Switzerland north of the Alps was flooded with polar air.
At St. Gallen, the thermometer dropped rapidly from more than 16 to 0.2 degrees. A fresh snow foam was locally up to about 800 meters, as reported by MeteoNews. Only in the alpine valleys and in the south did it remain milder.
As the north cooled, moisture accumulated in Ticino. There was heavy rain locally yesterday Monday. For example, MeteoNews recorded 92 millimeters of rain at the Mosogno measurement station.
Today the bevel should open the cloud layer during the day. SRF Meteo expects 13 degrees in the north and 21 in Ticino. It will be pretty cool until “Kalten Sophie” on Friday.
According to MeteoSwiss, the ice saints in Central Europe fall on the days of May 11-14. These are the known days of Mamertus, Pankratius, Servatius, and Bonifatius. Cold Sophie will conclude this cold phase on May 15. (sda / mlu)
