New November Highs

With an extremely mild southwest wind, it was warmer today than ever in November. A total of 20 stations on the state monitoring network reported a new November high temperature today. The absolute maximum value was measured in Delémont with 22.8 degrees. A private station at Laufental even registered 23.4 degrees. There were new highs especially in northwestern Switzerland, in Zurich Unterland, in the cantons of Thurgau and Schaffhausen, but also in the western foothills of the Alps, in Goms and even in the Jungfraujoch. The record in Basel is quite remarkable. Measurements have been made there for more than 150 years, and the old record of 1899 was broken on Monday. There were no records in southern Switzerland or the classical foehn areas. The hair dryer was too weak today. The absolute maximum for November, measured in Lugano at 24.6 degrees, was also lost. The foehn record on the north side of the Alps was held at 24.4 degrees, measured at Bad Ragaz / SG on November 6, 1997.

Soft night

Monday night was a record heat. In Fahy, in the Ajoie, the temperature did not drop below 15.3 degrees all night. That was by far the warmest November night in Fahy. The old record was dated November 7, 2015 with a minimum of 12.2 degrees. But Fahy wasn’t the only Jura station to experience the warmest night in November. New records were also set at Delsberg, La Brévine and La Chaux-de-Fonds, as well as at Chaumont over Neuchâtel. At Rünenberg, in the canton of Baselland, the old record of exactly 12 degrees was also equaled. The warmest night in November was also recorded in other parts of the country, for example in Aadorf in the canton of Thurgau, in Wädenswil on Lake Zurich, in Blatten in Lötschental and also in Schuls in the Lower Engadine.

The cold front arrives Tuesday

The ghost ended Tuesday night. A cold front is coming from the northwest. With it, temperatures drop significantly. On Tuesday afternoon it should only be about 10 degrees in the Central Plateau, and in the foothills of the Alps, the snow line drops to 1,500 meters in places at night, while it remains higher within the Alps. It will be extremely mild again in the mountains from next Friday.
