Former Bosnian Serbian leader Momcilo Krajisnik died Tuesday at the age of 75 as a result of a corona infection. This was reported by the local portal «nezavisne.com», citing the Banja Luka University Hospital, where Krajisnik was last treated.
The convicted war criminal was during the Bosnian war (1992-1995) the Speaker of the Parliament of the separate state of the Serbian Republic (RS) established in Bosnia. He was a close confidant of the then President of the Republika Srpska Radovan Karadzic, whom the Hague Yugoslavia Tribunal sentenced to life in prison for genocide and other war crimes in 2019.
Triumphal reception upon return
Krajisnik was arrested in 2000 by French soldiers from the Bosnian peacekeeping force SFOR. The Hague Court sentenced him to 27 years in prison in the first instance and 20 years in prison on appeal. He served prison in the UK prison system. He was released in 2013. In the Republic of Serbia he received a triumphant welcome upon his return.
In late August, Krajisnik was transferred to the Banja Luka University Hospital. A test found that he had a coronavirus infection. Immediately afterwards it had to be artificially ventilated. (SDA)
