It is a December afternoon in Näfels GL in 2019: the Glarus canton police ring the doorbell of an apartment. Search for a fugitive prisoner who did not return from an unaccompanied doctor’s visit about ten days ago.
The cantonal police now suspect that the fugitive is in this apartment in Näfels: it belongs to a friend. “After ringing the doorbell several times and after several minutes,” the door finally opens. This is what the criminal order reported by “Südostschweiz” says.
The prisoner sat in the closet
The tenant tells the cantonal police that he is alone in the apartment and has not heard from his colleague for a long time. The police are suspicious of the behavior and demand to be able to look around the apartment. The man agrees. And he actually finds the fugitive, in a closet!
The fugitive had told his colleague that he “just wanted to take a little vacation.” At some point he would have returned to the penal system or would be “arrested”.
The tenant removed the guest from prison.
The tenant pleaded guilty to the attempted favoritism: because he “tried to evade someone from jail, without the success associated with completion.” The tenant knew that his guest was getting out of jail and was not allowed to be with him.
For the Public Ministry, the case is clear: the tenant thus withdrew his guest from jail. “Although this was not a frustration of the prison system, since the cantonal police found the fugitive in a closet of the accused.”
The verdict for the tenant: Conditional fine of 30 daily rates and a fine of around 500 francs. In addition, he was charged a fee of 650 francs. (my I)
