Kenyan Kibiwott Kandie was the first runner to fall under 58 minutes in the half marathon. Julien Wanders is brilliant too.

Julien Wanders covered the half marathon distance in Valencia for the second time in his career in less than an hour. The Genevan crossed the finish line in 59:55 minutes. Wanders was just 42 seconds above his own European record from February 2019.

Sunday’s performance is remarkable, because the French-speaking country did not prepare specifically for this race. Wanders was accompanied for the first time in Spain by his new coach Renato Canova. Like the 24-year-old Genevan, the 75-year-old Italian lives mainly in Kenya.

4 runners below the old world record

In a historically fast race, Kenyan Kibiwott Kandie set a world record for a half marathon. In 57:32 minutes, the 24-year-old fell 29 seconds short of the previous record of his compatriot Geoffrey Kamworor, who had set it just over a year ago in Copenhagen. A total of 4 runners stayed below the old world record in Valencia.
