Autobahn initiative accepted
In the canton of Baselland, the electorate clearly accepted the initiative “to expand high-speed roads. The yes has no concrete consequences.
The referendum presented in May 2015 was approved with 60.04 percent of the votes in favor. 58,666 people with the right to vote approved the proposal, 39,044 rejected it. The turnout was 53.46 percent.
Legislative initiative from the ranks of the car-friendly Basel Chamber of Commerce requires the canton to do more to expand the high-performance road network, negotiate common expansion targets with neighboring cantons, and pressure the federal government for expansion of the network.
The government had already said before the vote that a yes to the initiative would not have concrete effects. The referendum has no direct costs either. However, in terms of content, it corresponds to the government program. (SDA)
