David Chipperfield’s construction is complete after twelve years. Now all that is missing is art in the newer part of what is now the largest Swiss art museum.
The great golden gate looks like a promise. If you pass by, you will find yourself in the huge lobby of the new extension to the Kunsthaus in Zurich. Surrounded by white marble on the floor, light gray exposed concrete on the walls, and brass accents with a matte finish, you suddenly feel very small in the 1,500-square-foot entrance hall. David Chipperfield’s building is 60 meters long and wide and 21 meters high. This size and generosity gives the building air and lightness.
André Odermatt, Head of the City of Zurich Building Construction Department, describes the expansion as “a real citizen of Zurich”. Despite the large presence, the Chipperfield building is elegantly reserved. Because after twelve years of planning and construction, the keys were handed over to the Zürcher Kunsthaus Foundation on Friday by the client, the Simple Art Society, Kunsthaus Extension, symbolically and virtually, like so many things this year. You don’t need a key anyway, the new Kunsthaus will open and close with badges and number codes, said Walter B. Kielholz, president of Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft, with a laugh.
