He is the man of the crisis, so much so that the vice president likes to abuse him as a dictator and, however, trust in the SP’s federal adviser, Alain Berset (48), is unshakable. The big crown poll, which the Link opinion research institute created exclusively for BLICK, shows: The Minister of Health is coming out of the water.
Only Defense Minister Viola Amherd (58, center) enjoyed an equally high level of approval. Both obtain an average of 3 out of 4 possible points. However, Berset has the advantage: he has the highest proportion of votes that give him the maximum rating of 4 and, therefore, a “complete” confidence, that is, 28 percent.
Cassis in the rear seats
Although SP federal councilor Simonetta Sommaruga (60) is just behind the two with 2.9 points, almost as many people trust her “completely” as Berset (26 percent).
This proportion is falling among the most common men: only one in ten gives Federal President Guy Parmelin (61, SVP) the highest number of points. At the bottom is the Federal Councilor of the FDP, Ignazio Cassis (59); for him, it is only 8 percent. The foreign minister can hardly score with the Swiss population: 35 percent tend not to trust him or don’t trust him at all; mistrust in him is greater than that of any other federal councilor.
Who can score with women?
Similar to opening speed, opinions differ based on age: the older a person is, the higher their confidence tends to be. Therefore, it is highest among those over 51 years of age. And it is generally larger for women. Sommaruga, in particular, enjoys a lot of support from the female half of the population. In the case of Finance Minister Ueli Maurer (70, Senior Vice President) and FDP Justice Minister Karin Keller-Sutter (57), however, gender has no influence.
Whether you can befriend Maurer or Berset: Basically, the state government still has strong support from three-quarters of the population. And more than 70 percent think that the state government reacted correctly in the second blockade.
Blind trust was last year
Can the gentlemen and ladies of the executive sit back and relax? Not at all. In principle, trust is relatively high, but it is no longer as unconditional as it was a year ago. At that time, the GFS Bern Institute asked the same questions in an equally representative survey in collaboration with BLICK, “Le Temps” and “Corriere del Ticino”. And while the proportion of people who basically trust the state government has only marginally decreased, the proportions within this field of approval have changed: in the spring of 2020, a third of the population gave the state government the highest rating, this year this is only 17 percent. .
This pattern can also be seen in the Federal Office of Public Health (BAG): today, only a scant 13 percent give BAG’s crisis management the highest rating; a year ago it was three times more. In principle, the confidence is there with a 71 percent approval. But simply put: “People no longer unconditionally support those who guide us through the crisis,” as study director Sabrina Pfister puts it.
Also interesting is the contrast with the United States and China, whose crisis management is viewed very critically. A valuable comparison, Pfister believes, because it shows: “Not only are all governments believed, but the assessment is different.”
The muzzle would not have been appreciated
Back to Switzerland: There was great outrage on the part of bourgeois politicians that members of the Corona scientific working group were constantly making public statements. Some of them even wanted to gag the task force. The population would hardly have appreciated it, because science in general enjoys great confidence, a higher level than the Federal Council, the FOPH and, above all, the World Health Organization. Today, one in four people trust science “completely”, and more than one in two trust science “somewhat”. Unlike the authorities, epidemiologists and virologists have hardly lost their support since last year.
