Play Suisse opens a window to film and television production from other linguistic regions. But the selection still has gaps.

It doesn’t work without a login
With Play Suisse, SRG relies on an algorithm that supposedly suggests new titles based on preferences. It remains to be seen how well this actually works, even Netflix’s recommendation system cannot always do this job satisfactorily.
For Gilles Marchand, General Director of SRG, Play Suisse is a “project close to my heart”: “Play Suisse is the new Idée Suisse. We are using digitization and the new world, ”he said in an interview with Blick.

For custom recommendations to work, there is a sign-in requirement. The SRG emphasizes that the data collected for this purpose is not shared with third parties or used commercially. Features such as continuation of series already started on different devices or storing language preferences depend on a login.
Discoveries beyond the borders of language
The ability to enjoy content in different languages with subtitles in German, French, Italian (and partly also Romansh) is the great advantage of Play Suisse. All video descriptions are shown to users in their language and ordered by topic.
You do not need to know the name of the RTS magazine “Temps présent”, for example your report on domestic violence can also be found under the keyword “Society”.
Many popular titles are missing at launch
It’s a shame that the selection at Play Suisse often seems arbitrary: the German range includes the classic “Das Boot ist voll” from 1981, but you won’t find any other titles known as “Die Schweizermacher” or “Die Herbstzeitlosen”. Certain current series like “Seitentriebe” or “Wilder” were included in the program, but only for the first season of “Wilder”. “The Undertaker” or the last episode of “Tatort” are completely missing.
The selection on Play Suisse often seems random: the first season of SRF’s “Wilder” series is on the show, the second is not.
