27 people evacuated after technical problems with the Lungen cable car: eyewitness report
Spectacular rescue operation on the Obwalden Lungern-Turren railway. Due to technical problems, the gondola stopped on Sunday morning. 27 passengers plus two dogs were rescued with Rega.
(zim / AH) The passengers are evacuated, healthy and have already had a hot tea. “There were no injuries,” Brigitte Breisacher says Sunday. That’s the most important thing. She is a member of the board of directors of the railway, herself on the spot and was able to speak with the 27 evacuated passengers. “They’re fine. Some even joked about the free helicopter flight.”
On Sunday morning at 9 a.m., the train suddenly stopped. The third cable car that went up got stuck in front of the first mast and was suspended in the air. “It was as if someone had pressed the emergency stop button,” says Breisacher. It quickly became clear that it was a technical defect. Those responsible immediately alerted the police, Rega and the mountain rescue service.
Rega flew about an hour
It wasn’t about waiting and repairing the railroad. Breisacher emphasizes: “Passenger safety is our highest priority.” These were then brought into the valley in a spectacular way with the Rega helicopter on a rope. Specialists flew for about an hour from around 11 a.m. By noon, all the passengers were safely back in the valley on the mainland.
Three passengers per flight were transported with a rope by helicopter. “The two dogs flew individually together with their owners,” says Breisacher. Animals are fine too. In the afternoon the gondola ran again.
Clarifies what exactly led to the failure. The Lungern-Turren railway runs from Lungern-Obsee to Turren at 1,562 meters above sea level in a few minutes. Upstairs, hikers have a view of Wetterhorn, Mittelhorn, and Rosenhorn with Rosenlauigletscher.
