In April, the federal government imported tons of masks. 18 million of them went on sale. Some of them are still sold today, in packs of 20. “Kassensturz” research shows, however, that the mask does not provide sufficient protection against the crown.
The consumer broadcast had VBS masks tested in Austria. The laboratory team measured the filter performance of five test samples, all of which failed. The worst VBS mask only filtered 80 percent of the aerosols.
The Austrian laboratory has already tested this mask for several clients, according to “Kassensturz”. It failed every time, but the results varied. The leader of the test, Professor Heinz-Peter Werner: “The quality is different, and that does not rule out that they come from different manufacturers.”
China question mark
This is indicated by the different packaging and various reports from the Chinese media. Finally, the manufacturer Jiaxuan also raises several questions. The company wasn’t founded until February. In mid-March, he received the green light from the authorities to manufacture masks. At that time, however, the capacity was only a few tens of thousands of masks a day. So how is it supposed to produce millions for Switzerland in a few days?
“Kassensturz” shows how the flop came about. The federal recruitment order ended up in the hands of the Swiss Red Cross (SRK). This came to Jiaxuan through various detours, including through a sole proprietorship from Zurich. The provider was recommended to SRC by the EPFL, it said in a statement.
When asked about the filter performance of 80 percent of the masks, the SRK says it was the best alternative at the time. Christine Kopp, the deputy director, is convinced in the statement that the masks would provide good protection in the context in which they are used.
Fell for a fake certificate
The Austrian test laboratory, which acted on behalf of “Kassensturz”, comes to a different conclusion: “Here it is to be expected that the virus aerosols still penetrate completely,” says test director Werner.
The DDPS and SRK relied, among other things, on a forged certificate issued by BSI Test Limited. The European Agency for Safety and Health has officially warned against this company. BSI Test Limited is not an actual certification body; the EU certificate on the VBS file is fake.
The DDPS was also based on test results from Spiez’s laboratory. But this is not even accredited to test hygienic masks according to European testing standards. Furthermore, Spiez not only used an incorrect test standard for his measurement, but also compared the measurement results with the mask that made headlines this summer as the “Müffel mask.” The federal government had to withdraw it. The mask’s expiration date of 2007 had long expired. (ise)
