Like something out of an adventure story: a young St. Görgler rummages through the muddy soil of the Mannenweiers and finds a locked safe. Now it’s clear: the safe was stolen a good five years ago when an apartment in Staad was raided. Police say what they found in the vault.
Like something out of a children’s adventure story: A boy found a safe in Mannenweier on Wednesday, city police confirmed upon request. The seeker is called Marlot Hersche, he is eleven years old and lives near the Drei Weieren. I was actually looking for a friend’s fidget spinner in the mud of Mannenweier. Marlot says:
While searching, I found a box in the mud. I wanted to turn it over, but it was heavy. I finally made it and realized it was a safe. It was very exciting.”
Marlot went home and told his mother about his find. “It looked like a mud monster,” says Tamara Hersche. They notified the city police, who showed up with a patrol. Marlot waited with her seven-year-old brother Yoann at the scene and answered questions from the police.
“You said if there is something valuable in the safe, I get ten percent.”
Vehicle keys and jewelry
The next day, it becomes clear where the safe came from and what was kept hidden at the bottom of the pond for five years. The safe was cleared to operate in an apartment in late November 2015 by previously unknown thieves. “At that time, money and jewelery worth around 10,000 francs were stolen,” says Hanspeter Krüsi, media spokesman for the St. Gallen cantonal police.
“We were able to return the safe to the injured party on Wednesday night.”
However, without any valuable content: inside there were still two vehicle keys, some costume jewelery and a jewelry box.
So it’s clear: the two guys are also left empty, there will probably be nothing with a seeker’s reward. But maybe his finding has a good thing anyway: “The police will try again to find out about the new traces of the perpetrator.”
Stolen goods are found again and again
Nonetheless, it was an exciting day for Marlot and his brother. “It was immediately clear to me that the safe was probably the result of a robbery,” says Marlot.
This is the opinion of Dionys Widmer, spokesman for the city of St. Gallen police: “It cannot be ruled out that the safe is a crime for theft,” says Widmer.
Therefore, the city police handed over the special finding to the criminal police of the St. Gallen cantonal police for further investigation. What’s in the vault was still unclear as of Wednesday night. Also where the safe came from and how long it had been in the mud.
St. Gallen Canton Police: Hardened and Unimpressed
Less impressed than Marlot was when it came to the discovery of the hardened police of the canton of St. Gallen. Hanspeter Krüsi, spokesperson for Kapo Media, says:
“Such a find is nothing unusual in itself. It happens over and over again that we have to examine such findings. “
This often occurs especially when the water level drops in small ponds or lakes. This is currently the case at the Drei Weieren: the bathroom facilities above St. Gallen are being renovated. Therefore, the water was drained. Objects were also found repeatedly in cornfields or Bachtobeln.
According to Krüsi, what happens to a found safe is routine work. “We run forensic tests on the property,” says Krüsi. Specifically, this means: securing DNA residues and tool marks in the safe to find conclusions about the perpetrators. He also tries to find out if and when his safe was stolen.
And for the rest, the Drei Weieren are a real treasure trove of objects: here are numerous sunglasses:
