Valais patient dies of listeriosis after consuming cheese

In Valais, four hospital patients became infected with Listeria, possibly from eating Schwyzer cheese. One of them, who had severe cancer, died of the consequences of the infectious disease.

According to the information in the menu plans, the infected patients actually ate cheese during their stay at the Center Hospitalier du Valais Romand (CHVR). However, it was not certain they would have consumed the cheese in question, Sion Hospital said Monday. Listeria infection was diagnosed in the patients between March 30 and May 2.

In early May, an internal inspection found listeria in Vogel cheese products in Steinerberg SZ. The cheese factory informed its customers and asked them to remove the products from the shelves. It also alerted the cantons of Central Switzerland and the Federal Office for Food and Veterinary Safety (FOAG) to contamination. This then issued a warning.

In people with an intact immune system, infection with Listeria is usually mild or even symptom-free. In immunocompromised people, on the other hand, the bacteria can develop a series of serious symptoms that could lead to death. During pregnancy, listeria infection can cause a miscarriage or the child can be born with blood poisoning or meningitis. (sda)
