The spots are closed and will probably stay that way for a while. Only the Büezers have been able to warm themselves inside with a hot lunch. One who is definitely not a Büezer in the classical sense is the president of the Valais, Christophe Darbellay (CVP, 49), but he still doesn’t take Corona’s requirements too seriously.
As reported by the French-speaking Swiss newspaper “La Liberté”, Darbellay and his party and government colleague Roberto Schmidt (58) dined at a currently closed restaurant in Conthey (VS) at the end of February, although bars are not yet allowed. to receive guests.
Spontaneous hospitality
It was a private meeting and the four of us ate in an empty room, Darbellay defends himself. Compared to the “Tages-Anzeiger,” Roberto Schmidt goes into detail: it was a meeting with a sympathizer who led the state councilors to his closed restaurant.
“We didn’t know the man owned a restaurant and we were surprised when he served us lunch after the conversation, which was neither planned nor agreed,” says Schmidt. Only later did they learn that the sympathizer’s wife had cooked. They did not want to reject the spontaneous hospitality.
However, the two should have done that: according to legal requirements, they were only allowed to eat in the restaurant if the owner lives in the same building, which was not the case, as Schmidt himself clarified. But that was only realized in hindsight, Schmidt said, regretting the incident.
There will be voting on Sunday
History also gets people talking in western Switzerland because the Valais asked the Federal Council to take action in the dispute over open restaurant terraces. The canton itself has strictly enforced Corona’s requirements, and even sued a restaurant operator because he was entertaining guests.
The mistake will hardly have legal consequences for the two state councilors. For Darbellay and Schmidt, the story still comes at an inopportune moment: because on Sunday the Valais elects its cantonal government. For the two State Councilors, it is not only about re-election, but also about defending the historical majority of the CVP in the government together with the candidate Serge Godin. (gbl)
