Lonza became world famous thanks to her collaboration with Moderna. In Valais, the group shapes an entire community.
In May, Lonza gained world fame practically overnight. The Swiss pharmaceutical company based in Basel and production center in Visp announced that it will produce the corona vaccine on behalf of Moderna. Moderna’s mRNA vaccine is one of two that have so far received approval in Switzerland. Lonza’s business figures for the final year 2020, which was shaped by the crown crisis, were eagerly awaited.
The group presented strong results on Wednesday. Sales grew 7.2 percent to 4.51 billion francs and net profit 35 percent to 871 million francs. The corona vaccine is partly responsible for the good result. But this is only one of the active ingredients Lonza produces on behalf of pharmaceutical companies.
Boom im Wallis
The pharmaceutical company has been growing continuously for several years. In the last 8 years alone, the number of full-time positions at Visp has increased by 1000 people. With almost 4,000 employees, the group is one of the largest employers in Valais.
Growth is also evident in Visp. While the community only had around 3,500 residents in 1960, it is currently around 8,000. The growing number of residents is accompanied by a construction boom. There are 300 apartments under construction in Visp alone.
Infrastructure, such as schools, kindergartens and the train station, must also be expanded. If Lonza continues to expand, Visp’s population is likely to continue to grow. At the moment, everything is running like clockwork for the pharmaceutical supplier. In bad times, the great solidarity with Lonza could also pose a risk to Visp.
