Preparations for the corona vaccination campaign are currently in full swing. The canton of the city is installing its vaccination base in the congress center of the fairgrounds. This should go live from January 4, says cantonal pharmacist Esther Ammann. The counterpart in the Basel area should also be ready in early January. The crisis team is setting up its vaccination center in Muttenz, in the immediate vicinity of the Feldreben crown clarification station.
The first cables are being laid
Telebasel got a glimpse of the future vaccination center in Muttenz today. The electrical installations are currently being prepared. And the inner work should start soon.
First, especially vulnerable people should be vaccinated. A separate entrance will be installed so that they do not come into contact with sick people visiting the corona testing center in the next hallway. And so that you can rest a little after the vaccination, a rest area is prepared.
Construction although no vaccine has yet been approved
Both cantons are currently fully accelerating the establishment of the vaccination infrastructure. A vaccine has not yet been approved. This approach is legitimate, believes Patrik Reiniger, head of the Basel-Landschaft crisis team. For the elderly and particularly vulnerable people in nursing homes in particular, it is important that they can get vaccinated as soon as possible. If lives can be saved in this way, it would be “very, very important to our society and especially to these people.”
Both cantons also want to use mobile vaccination teams, especially to reach people who cannot easily drive to a vaccination center. They would then drive directly to the fragile people and vaccinate them on the spot.
Swissmedic keeps a low profile
Lukas Jaggi, a spokesman for the Swiss Agency for Therapeutic Products, Swissmedic, could not give details about the ongoing proceedings. This same week, pharmaceutical companies provided new data on safety and manufacturing quality.
However, it is very possible that a vaccine will be approved this year. “When companies can respond quickly to open questions and we have sufficient and meaningful data on benefits and risks,” continues Jaggi.
Four vaccines underway
According to Swissmedic, four vaccines are currently in the approval process. A vaccine from AstraZeneca, Pfizer / BioNTech, Moderna and Janssen-Cilag from the Johnson & Johnson Health Group.
Other vaccines may well be tried in the future. This could include more exotic vaccines from Russia or China. According to Swissmedic spokesperson Lukas Jaggi, the prerequisite for this is that an authorization request is submitted.
As soon as a vaccine has been approved in Switzerland and the vaccination centers are up and running, you can sign up for a vaccination appointment.
