Fatigue, headache, pain at the puncture site – people should be prepared for the possibility of such side effects, which are common with vaccines, even after a pike against coronavirus.
This came out on Friday from a study published in the “New England Journal of Medicine” on vaccine trials by the Mainz company Biontech and the US pharmaceutical company Pfizer.
Redness or swelling
Vaccination experts say: It’s not pleasant, but it’s not a cause for great concern either. For the study, 44,820 men and women were examined from late June to mid-November. About half of them received the vaccine twice, the rest a placebo. Depending on the age group and whether it was the first or second dose, 66 to 83 percent reported pain at the injection site. Five to seven percent had redness or swelling in the area.
Other symptoms were fatigue, headache, chills, diarrhea, or muscle and body aches. Some of the participants developed fever, especially with the second dose of vaccination. According to the study, these side effects were generally mild to moderate and resolved in a short time.
“A bit uncomfortable”
These side effects are common with vaccines. However, compared to many established vaccines, such as the flu, the side effects are comparatively more pronounced. Vaccination experts compared the reactions with those who received the shingles vaccine. But there’s no reason to be more concerned, said Stefan Kaufmann, director emeritus of the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology: “It’s a bit uncomfortable.”
In addition to the minor complaints, there were some more serious “adverse events”. 64 people who were vaccinated reported swollen lymph nodes. One person each reported shoulder injury, cardiac arrhythmia, and leg paresthesia, i.e. numbness. Vaccine tolerability will continue to be tested after approval. (SDA / bra)
