Just hours after he canceled next week’s planned television duel with challenger Joe Biden, US President Donald Trump has now suggested a postponement. The debate, originally planned for Oct. 15, should be postponed for a week to allow candidates to be directly compared in a room, Trump’s campaign team said Thursday afternoon (local time). The third and final debate on October 22 will also be postponed for a week.
The move to a virtual format was “unacceptable,” Trump had previously said in an interview with the television channel “Fox Business.” “I will not waste my time in a virtual debate.” His team announced that Trump would instead hold his own campaign event on the date the television duel was supposed to take place.
The duel was scheduled for Thursday night (local time) next week. According to the commission’s announcement, moderator Steve Scully and the audience must meet at the planned location in Miami, Florida, the two candidates must be at a different location.
Trump could still be contagious
The duel has recently been increasingly controversial because Trump is still recovering from the Covid 19 disease and could still be contagious to this date. The Republican had rejected this and said he was looking forward to the duel. Democrat Biden, for his part, had announced that the duel should not take place if Trump was still sick or infected.
In their first television match on September 29, the two opponents had a violent exchange of blows. According to experts, there was no clear winner. Trump tested positive for the corona virus three days later. After three days of hospital treatment, the 74-year-old man was released from the hospital last Monday.
