- Russian Daniil Medvedev (ATP 5) and Austrian Dominic Thiem (ATP 3) play for the finals of the US Open semifinals.
- Medvedev did not give compatriot Andrej Rublew (ATP 14) a break opportunity in his quarterfinals and won 7: 6 (8: 6), 6: 3, 7: 6 (7: 5).
- Thiem controlled the game against Australian Alex de Miñaur (ATP 28) and won 6: 1, 6: 2, 6: 4.
Last year’s finalist Daniil Medvedev remained in the US Open men’s table without losing a single set to Andrej Rublew in the quarterfinals. The Russian did not have to defend against a break opportunity at 7: 6 (8: 6), 6: 3, 7: 6 (7: 5), but faced three set balls in the first set tie-break. .
The game against Rublev was Medvedev’s first litmus test after he had not previously defeated any top 75 opponents, and he passed with flying colors. Shortly before the end he had to fix his shoulder, but was able to finish the game without visible restrictions.
Thiem begins furiously
Dominic Thiem bought the guts of his opponent Alex de Miñaur from the beginning. He took away all of the 21-year-old’s service games in the first set, after just 39 minutes the set was bagged. From his point of view, De Miñaur’s 3-1 break was in vain.
In the second set, the Aussie held harmless until 2: 2, before “giving” Thiem 2 breaks with 2 double errors. In the third round there was a supposed rebellion: De Miñaur got a break and was suddenly on par. With the score of 4: 4 he probably felt his nerves again and made it easier for Thiem to realize the breakdown that was decisive for the match.
Logical semifinal
With Medvedev and Thiem, the favorites have prevailed in the lower half of the table. On Saturday night, tournaments # 3 and # 2 will play for a place in the final. So far, it’s 2: 1 for Thiem in the head-to-head.
