Virus-free or “on the lower end of the scale”: Trump stands in front of his supporters today
US President Donald Trump gathered his supporters in front of the White House on Saturday for his first public appearance after his Covid 19 disease. Trump will speak on the south meadow of his residence, the White House announced Friday for the night (local time). According to the US media, about 2,000 people were invited. Trump wants to turn to her from the balcony of the White House. The second television showdown planned for next week with his Democratic challenger Joe Biden was officially canceled because Trump did not want an online debate, but a real meeting.
It is not yet clear if the president is no longer contagious. Trump said in a television interview broadcast late Friday that he had been tested but had not yet received the values. But it was virus-free or “at the lower end of the scale,” Trump claimed. He’s also not getting any more medication, “probably for eight hours or so,” Trump said in the recorded interview on Friday. It was the first time since the illness that the president was on television for a long time.
Trump’s personal physician, Sean Conley, announced Thursday that the president could return to public appointments starting Saturday. According to official information, he tested positive on Thursday of last week.
“Superspreader Event” at the White House
According to media reports, participants of the event at the White House will be required to wear strict masks. In recent weeks, Trump’s numerous campaign appearances have been noted because many of the bystanders were not wearing masks or keeping their distance.
It was similar at an event on the White House lawn on September 26, in which attorney Amy Coney Barrett was presented as Trump’s candidate for the Supreme Court. Then several participants tested positive. Trump and President Melania could have been infected there as well. Former New Jersey State Governor Chris Christie is still in the hospital. Renowned American epidemiologist Anthony Fauci spoke of a “super spread event” at the White House.
Trump was treated with an experimental antibody agent, among other things. Now he calls it a “cure.” Trump said in the television interview that he had been temporarily diagnosed with congestion in his lungs; his personal physician, Conley, had previously only discussed “expected findings” when asked about it.
The debate will take place on October 22
Trump had previously announced an election campaign appearance in Florida for Saturday night, but at the same time admitted that it was not yet clear whether this could be staged in such a short time. Now the trip to Florida has been announced for Monday. Florida is one of the important states for the November 3 presidential election. Trump is behind challenger Joe Biden in polls, as well as in national polls.
The second Trump / Biden television debate planned for next week has been officially canceled. Opponents should meet as scheduled on October 22, as organizers announced on Friday. Both parties have agreed for this date.
The planning for the October 15 debate was confused when Trump contracted Covid-19. The commission announced Thursday that it would hold the debate online instead of bringing the candidates together in a single room. Trump later canceled his participation. Biden then scheduled a question time with voters for the day, which will be televised. Trump’s campaign adviser Jason Miller said Friday that Trump would also ask voters questions that day, on various television channels. The organizing committee for the debates pointed out that the candidates had other plans. (viw / sda / dpa)
