The US electoral dispute is reaching a critical point: other states want to file lawsuits
In the dispute over the outcome of the US presidential elections, fronts are being built before the Supreme Court. On Thursday, six other states requested permission to join the Texas lawsuit aimed at overturning Joe Biden’s victory over incumbent Donald Trump. At the same time, 22 US states and territories presented their arguments against the Texas lawsuit. Earlier, Trump also requested to join the lawsuit.
After Trump’s lawyers and his supporters failed in more than 50 cases with lawsuits against the election results in courts of several states., the decisive legal battle before the Supreme Court is now emerging. It is not yet clear whether the Supreme Court will accept the lawsuit.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued four other states on Monday. He argued that Pennsylvania, Georgia, Wisconsin, and Michigan had constitutionally violated the elections. Therefore, the results there should not be taken into account. Paxton justified this, among other things, with the fact that voters were not treated equally and decisions about the organization of the vote were not made by state parliaments, as stipulated by the constitution.

Trump has been claiming since the Nov. 3 election that he was only deprived of victory by massive fraud in favor of Biden. Neither he nor his lawyers presented convincing evidence, and accounts in individual states confirmed Biden’s victory.
Trump’s lawyers are now arguing in the Supreme Court that he does not have to prove fraud. It is only necessary to demonstrate that the procedure deviated from the guidelines established by the local parliaments. Furthermore, they claim that the alleged wrongdoing in individual states also destroyed the evidence of the fraud, so it can no longer be proven.
In addition to the electoral authorities, the United States Attorney General, William Barr, recently said that no irregularities or fraud had been found to the extent that they could change the outcome of the elections.

The results of each state are the key to winning the presidential election. The president of the United States is not elected directly by the people, but by 538 voters who normally vote based on the outcome in their states. 270 of your votes are required for victory. According to the results of the November 3 election, Biden had 306 voters behind him. Voting by the electorate is scheduled for December 14.
In Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan and Wisconsin together there are 62 electoral votes. Paxton wants the electorates in these states to be commissioned by local parliaments or not appointed in the first place. In addition to the lawsuit, the Texan petitioned the Supreme Court for a court order to immediately stop all activities involving the electorate in the four states.
All four states sued by Texas also submitted their responses Thursday. You didn’t skimp on harsh words. Pennsylvania condemned Paxton’s move as a “seditious abuse of the legal process.” In contrast, the previous day, justice ministers from 17 states expressed their support in principle for the Texas lawsuit. The approval also came from 106 Republican members of the House of Representatives.
These Republicans have turned their backs on Trump
Even before the election, Trump had set out to quickly fill a vacant Supreme Court seat with conservative attorney Amy Coney Barrett. – and referred to a possible dispute over the outcome of the elections. Conservatives now dominate the court with a majority of six to three votes. However, previous demands from the Trump camp have been rejected equally by justices, regardless of whether they were nominated by Democratic or Republican presidents. (sierra / sda / dpa)
